So this year I really wanted to see how new year’s would be in Dubai, so me and my friend Erna were hoping to have off days during that period. Unfortunately it didn’t quite work out that way, so I ended up having a 12hour work day to Colombo (Sri Lanka) and back, arriving at 21:00 in the evening in Dubai, and Erna got a last minute change on her roster ending up going to Guangzhou (China)
That night Dubai suffered from heavy traffic congestion into the centre, towards the Burj Khalifa area, unbelievably actually! It took me almost an hour to get back home after my flight (which usually takes about 20mins). Luckily my new flat mate Daniela, and her two friends that came to visit her from Qatar and Taiwan were to meet me at our apartment to celebrate. It took them almost 3 hours to get here, they eventually had to get out of the taxi and start walking and they finally made it here at 23:15 !!
Shk Zayed road was on a stand still, people were just getting out of their cars and decided to just make themselves comfortable on the grass next to the road to watch the fireworks… they knew they were not getting to their destinations before midnight.
From my apartment (on the 21st floor) the people looked like zombies (or ants) all under the spell of the ‘tall tower’ as they made their way to the Burj Khalifa. Cars were parked everywhere, people were everywhere, I felt so lucky being up here, safe and sound with a perfect view of the world record breaking fireworks that’s about to come
We set up our cameras and had a quick bite to eat (pizza), popped the champagne and waited for the countdown… the fireworks were spectacular!! I would’ve really liked to be with my friends and family, but I’m glad I got to experience this world record breaking firework display!
Thank you Dubai for another unique experience and happy new year to all!!
