There’s nothing like a mini holiday in Rio to cheer you up! :)

After a long 14hour flight, arriving at the Sheraton in Rio, it looked and felt like paradise! I remember while still sitting on the bus, passing the hotel with its private beach, I thought, damn…these hotel guests are lucky! Little did I know (but discovered a few seconds later) that I am one of those lucky ones! The bus stopped in front of the Sheraton and it was as if everyone found a new source of energy. We got our room keys, changed, and headed straight for the beach to see the sunset. The first caipirinha’s (Brazil’s national cocktail) were ordered and we just relaxed on the beach….

Irena and I decided to have a quick dinner by the pool as we had a night full of exploring ahead of us. We all met up in the lobby and left for Lapa, one of the nightlife areas in Rio. Squashed in a mini van, we stopped in the middle of traffic, hazzards on, and everyone got out of the van and ran to the closest street stall that sold beer, and so after a few seconds everyone got back in, very excited about their purchase!

At Lapa more caipirinha’s were enjoyed with a little snacking in between at all the street stalls – I had cake (just couldn’t resist) at around 11pm maybe? all worth it though :)

Later, we left for our final stop, a dance school that will be participating in the Rio carnival next month. they had a pre-Rio carnival party, and we got to experience the dancing! too embarrassed to even attempt a single dance move I watched their every move trying to make sense of how it’s even possible to move your body in such a way… not even talking about their super fit yet curvacious bodies, one word…insane!!

we got back to the hotel at around 2am, not even sure how many hours I’ve been awake…dead tired. but Rio waits for no-one especially if you only have 2 days!! I got up early for breakfast, sat at the restaurant overlooking the beach…blessed!
Irena, Erin and I went for a few hours of soaking up the sun before our flight to Buenos Aires… what a way to start the day ;)

………

We arrived in Buenos Aires that evening too tired to care, but we knew we had to get our hands (and mouths) on some good steak! We went out with the flight deck and our seniors for dinner just around the corner of the hotel, quite an expensive place might I had, goodbye allowance, oops! The meat was incredibly tasty, so no complaints there, just had to get my hands on some more money for the next day ;)

After a good sleep Irena and I decided to take a taxi and go explore the area of Caminito la boca, a touristic area with lots of colorful old buildings, which are mostly restaurants and art galleries with live entertainment. Almost every second restaurant had tango dancers performing and I couldn’t stop staring! Maybe that’s why, when we finally decided on a place for lunch, the very attractive tango dancer invited me on stage for my first tango lesson. He said I was doing pretty good, but all I can remember was staring at our feet trying not to make a fool of myself. Afterwards he gave me a brochure for tango lessons, oh how I would love to learn how to tango in Argentina!! (…maybe that should be on my bucket list). we had a lovely afternoon in La boca and then returned to the hotel for a quick nap before our flight back to Rio.

………

First up for the morning in Rio… running of a cliff?! well sort of, we’re going hang gliding!! after 2days of convincing my dear colleagues about this once in a lifetime experience we finally headed for this exciting adventure! I couldn’t wait, with mixed feelings of excitement and nervousness we headed up to the launching point. Once we got up there, there were no turning back… we got briefed by our instructors and got strapped in what looked like sleeping bags, that would tie us to our hang gliding kites. definitely no turning back now!! :)

I got a little bit more nervous than excited when it was my turn to make my approach… the key is not to look down they said, so I didn’t. I loved every second of it!! the scenery was so beautiful and it’s not scary at all up there. I will do it again for sure!! by far one of the best experiences ever! and the best part is that I get to say that I’ve done it in Rio, how cool is that?!

Like the day wasn’t pretty amazing already, we went to go check out Copa Cabana beach! the beach was super crowded! We immediately went for a swim and like a true tourist bought some brazilian bikinis, on the beach, how convenient ;) Apparently my full bikini bottom was too embarrassing for my fellow crew friends, so they made me buy smaller brazilian ones (which they helped to pick out – I had to try them on right there and then), haha!

This was without a question one of the best trips Ive done so far, thank you new friendies, I will treasure it forever :) xx
